Legacy Modernization for a Global Branded Merchandise Leader

Jul 30, 2025

Overview

PalTech worked with a well-known company in the U.S. that provides branded merchandise, employee recognition programs, and custom uniforms. The company has been in business for over 70 years and has offices around the world with more than 1,800 employees. They support some of the largest companies globally and had recently crossed $1 billion in yearly sales.

They reached out to PalTech to help upgrade one of their important internal systems. The system was old, hard to maintain, and didn’t work well with modern tools. PalTech helped them move to a new, cloud-based system that is faster, easier to manage, and ready for future growth.

Problem Statement

The client’s core application, built on outdated Java Servlets and IBM Informix, had become difficult to maintain, scale, and integrate with modern platforms. It posed increasing risks to innovation, performance, and security, impacting their ability to serve a global customer base efficiently.

Challenges

  1. Outdated, Rigid Architecture – The monolithic design constrained the ability to innovate or integrate with modern tools.
  2. Legacy Authentication System – The existing login system lacked modern security and seamless access control.
  3. Cloud & Integration Limitations – Incompatibility with cloud services and modern APIs hindered operational efficiency.

Our Strategy / Solution

  • Rebuilt the application using React for the frontend and AWS Lambda for a scalable, serverless backend.
  • Migrated data from IBM Informix to PostgreSQL with real-time sync to ensure zero downtime.
  • Integrated Microsoft SSO for centralized, secure authentication.
  • Embedded the new application into the legacy system using iFrames, resolving styling conflicts for a seamless user experience.
  • Enabled secure document storage and access through FileBound cloud integration.
  • Implemented JUnit and SonarQube for automated unit testing and code quality management.

Key Benefits

  1. Faster Innovation & Lower Costs – Cloud-native architecture reduced technical debt and improved feature delivery speed.
  2. Stronger Security & Compliance – Microsoft SSO integration modernized access management and improved data protection.
  3. Zero Downtime Migration – Real-time sync enabled seamless data migration without service disruption.

Conclusion

PalTech’s modernization initiative transformed a rigid, outdated system into a scalable, secure, and efficient platform that supports the client’s evolving business needs. By blending legacy compatibility with cutting-edge technologies, we ensured continuity while unlocking future growth potential.
